The Cairns City Kennel Club is a great opportunity for your business to promote your goods and services to our members and competitors travelling to participate in dog shows, dog sports trials and weekend workshops.

We are the largest combined dog show and dog sports club in Queensland and one of the largest recreational clubs in Cairns. Our 300 members are passionate dog lovers. Everyday pet owners, knowledgeable breeders, experienced trainers and talented dog sport handlers all have the one thing in common – our love of dogs.

Our club facilities are located within the Cairns Showgrounds and are used 6 days per week, 7 days during peak competition season. Our club runs a variety of activities for the dog enthusiast including conformation shows and an array of dog sports (agility, rally, obedience, tracking, scent works, flyball and tricks).

2022 offers the additional opportunity to help us celebrate our 70th Anniversary. We plan to run a a number of special events throughout the year and the highlight being Dog Expo where members of the public can see some of our activities first hand and participate in a range of fun and educational activities.

Our most popular activity is our weekly obedience classes with up to 40 dogs and their handlers learning the basics of good canine care and obedience. The 7 week course is a basic introduction to obedience for new dog owners with the goal to create good owners and canine citizens. . Many of these people stay on with the club taking part in further training or commencing their journey into many of our other activities.

Our clubhouse and grounds are also the venue of choice for dog shows run by the Atherton Tablelands Kennel Club, Mareeba and District Kennel Club and Innisfail Kennel Club. Our membership base also extends beyond the Cairns Region.

We enjoy active lifestyles and getting out and about with their four legged friends. Members are always the look out for what is best for their dogs; diet and nutrition, healthcare, toys, treats and grooming products to name a few. Of course we like to look after ourselves too.

In a typical year the clubs is the venue for 18 weekends of competitions. 6 weekends of dog shows and 12 weekends of dog sports trials.

A weekend dog show, running Saturday and Sunday, will attract up to 130 people. 72% travelling from outside of the Cairns region to attend the show. In addition to entry fees, these shows inject up to $30,000 into the local Cairns economy through accommodation, meals, fuel, camping and other miscellaneous spending. The canteen sales at the event are typically around $2,000.

Our dog sports trials have lower numbers but are growing in popularity as people see the benefits of training and keeping their dog active. A dog sport trial will have about 35 people attending, 14% from outside the Cairns region. Dog sports trials inject up to $5,000 into the local Cairns Cairns economy through accommodation, meals, fuel, camping and other miscellaneous spending.

With a limited supply of local judges, we regularly fly them into Cairns from around Queensland or interstate (COVID-19 permitting). Judges or competitors regularly extend their stay in the Cairns region after attending a show or trial. Only recently a judge headed north on a camping adventure to the Cape after judging at a dog show.

Our members competing in Dog Shows and Dog Sports regularly travel up and down the coast to attend shows and trials. It’s common for members to travel between 5,000 to 10,000 km a year to attend events. At a dog event, whether it be a show or trial,  you’ll see a line up of caravans, motorhomes, and tents.  Must haves are a good quality gazebo for shade, a comfortable camp chair and the latest camping mod-cons are a must for our members travelling to events or even attending for the day.

Contact with our members is important with newsletters regularly emailed to members and updates on our Facebook page, which has over 1450 followers. Our website has an average number visitors of 22 per day, this rises to up to 40 per day in the lead up to events where we often have information available. Page visits average 40 per day and rise to 100, again in the lead up to events and activities.  Our three most popular pages, apart from the home page, are Puppy Preschool, Pet Manners and Dog Show Exhibitor Information.

The options of how your business can become part of our club are limitless; anything from the donation of prizes, in-kind support, cash donations or discounts on goods or services.

This is only a snapshot of what our club has to offer. I look forward to exploring how the Cairns City Kennel Club can partner with your business.
